Ashkatah is 15.3 hands and a real packer! He has incredible musculature and form. Gelded late, he has the look of a stallion but is very smart and gentle with his human and equine companions alike. Ashkatah was a barrel racer and did 4H and Dressage. He is completed in both Western Pleasure and English. He developed a bad left front hoof, so his life at our farm will be much easier than before. We will put no demands on him here. He will live out the rest of his years with us as my equine companion.
People ask me how I came up with his name. I feel that he actually told me himself, in an unspoken language we seem to share. Every morning I would commune with him in the pasture, asking him to tell me what he wanted me to call him. "Tell me about your name", I would ask. One day, he seemed to say to me "My name is like the wind, it is like the sound of the earth beneath my feet, my name is FREE". Slowly it came to me, watching him run.. "AAAAAAAAHHHHH". Then I felt the earth tremble under his feet "sshhhKaaaaa". He dashed off and ran from me...running free.. "taaaaaahhhhh". I just put it together, Ahh shka ta. Ashkatah. Thats it! I called to him and he ran back and gave me a nudge. Ashkatah and I have developed a special bond and I look forward to many wonderful years ahead with him.
Below you will find pictures of Ashkatah's first few weeks in his new home. He had 4 miniature horses to become acquainted with, beside his new humans, us! That proved most interesting for everyone involved!
